As I turn 19, I can't help but feel like I have lived for 49 years, and I have a few nuggets of wisdom to share with you (even if I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing):
- You'll never feel ready or prepared enough for anything. Take a chance, and if you fail, consider it one step closer to success.
- While meritocracy may be a myth, hard work will always last longer than wealth and social class. So keep working hard, and you'll reap the benefits eventually.
- Always be kind, caring, and empathetic towards others, as you never know what they might be going through.
- Overdressed? There's no such thing. Wear what makes you feel good and confident.
- Engage with people as much as possible, especially when you're young. You never know where a simple conversation could lead you in the future.
- Tequila is better than vodka. That's just a fact.
- High school won't last forever, so use the time you have to figure out who you are and what you stand for. Build a foundation for yourself that you can fall back on when things get tough.
- Black coffee is the only acceptable way to drink it. Trust me on this one.
- Failing an exam won't kill you. It's okay to not score a 90. Don't beat yourself up about it.
- It's not embarrassing to care or try hard. It's embarrassing to want something without putting any effort into it.
- Your romantic relationships may come and go, but your friends (especially the girls) will always have your back. Cherish those relationships and prioritize them above all else.
- Friendships don't always last forever, and that's okay. People grow and change, and sometimes, you just have to let go.
- You're young and have time, but don't waste it. Start taking life seriously now, and don't wait until you're 25 to start making changes.
- Take risks and try new things. You never know what you might discover about yourself.
- Don't let one particular interest define your entire personality. Be open to new experiences and ideas.
- No one is deeply examining your Instagram pictures. So post what you want, and don't worry about what others might think.
- Communication is key in any kind of relationship. If something is bothering you, address it in a respectful manner.
- Take tons of pictures! Your memory isn't always reliable, and it's nice to have something to look back on and remember the good times.
- Being petty is okay (to a certain extent). Use your petty years wisely, and don't take yourself too seriously.
